It’s not new, but the documentary Beer Wars is available for streaming on Netflix. If you haven’t seen it, you should sit down for an hour and a half to watch it right this second. It’s very informative, and it features some unique perspective from high-profile craft brewers including Dogfish Head’s Sam Calagione, Stone Brewing’s Greg Koch, Boston Beer Co.’s Jim Koch and New Belgium’s Kim Jordan, among others.
The film was released in 2009, and a lot has changed in the craft beer world since it was filmed. But a lot has also stayed the same; Anheuser-Busch, Miller and Cools still rule the roost, and more than half of all the beer sold in the States comes from these companies, for example.
Even so, some craft breweries are gaining ground. The Boston Beer Company is now the top craft brewery in the United States, based on 2011 beer sales volume, according to the Brewers Association. And the maker of Samuel Adams brews is also the number five overall brewer in America, based on sales, with Sierra Nevada taking the number seven slot.
